Santiago Domínguez Coello

Santiago graduated in Medicine and Surgery from the University of La Laguna in 1988. From 1990 to 1993, he completed his residency training in Family and Community
Medicine at the Teaching Unit of the Primary Care Management Office and the University Hospital Nuestra Señora de Candelaria in Tenerife.
In 1994, he began working as a family physician in primary care. Between 1995 and 1997, he worked in the Emergency Department of the University Hospital of the Canary Islands, while simultaneously conducting his doctoral research. In 1997, he was awarded a Doctor of Medicine degree by the University of La Laguna after successfully defending his doctoral thesis, entitled “Prevalence of Ischemic Heart Disease and Its Risk Factors on the Island of El Hierro”, which received the highest academic distinction, Apto Cum Laude. From 1998 to 2006, he worked as a family physician at the Tacoronte Health Centre in Tenerife. In 2006, he joined the Research Unit of the Primary Care Management Office and Nuestra Señora de Candelaria Hospital, where he worked until 2009. During this period, he authored and co-authored several scientific publications addressing diabetes, hypertension, insulin resistance, and nutrition. Most of these publications were related to the CDC de Canarias cohort study, an epidemiological research project.
In 2009, he returned to clinical practice as a family physician, joining the La Victoria de Acentejo Health Centre in Tenerife, where he obtained a permanent position. Since then, he has combined his clinical responsibilities with ongoing research activities and projects conducted by the Research Unit.
He continues to practice as a family physician at the La Victoria de Acentejo Health Centre.
