1. Scientific Contributions My research focuses on the transformation of health services, with special emphasis on primary care, digital health, telemedicine, and artificial intelligence (AI). I have been the principal investigator in competitive regional, national, and international projects, including END-VOC (GA: 101046314), FLASH (GA: 101095424), eProSchools (GA: 101095635), and COVID-X (GA: 101016065), managing a total research budget exceeding €850,000.
I have led pioneering studies on asynchronous teleconsultations, real-world validation of AI algorithms, and the environmental impact of telemedicine. These works have been published in high-impact journals such as The Lancet Regional Health Europe , JMIR , BMC Medicine , and Scientific Reports , accumulating over 3,000 citations (h-index: 24 Scopus). I have also participated in multicenter cohorts such as END-VOC, evaluating the serological response to SARS-CoV-2 and reinfection risk among healthcare workers.
I have coordinated interdisciplinary scientific teams and collaborated with leading European institutions such as INSERM (France), Utrecht University (Netherlands), and University of Würzburg (Germany). I have exercised scientific leadership in all phases of projects: methodological design, data analysis, scientific communication, and results transfer.
2. Contributions to Society My research has contributed directly to the implementation of digital tools in the Catalan public health system. The results of my work have led to improvements in eConsulta , the asynchronous telemedicine service in primary care, including the definition of frequent consultation reasons and integration of clinical decision aids.
I have promoted the use of AI for image-based screening in primary care, participating in the validation of diagnostic algorithms for skin lesions and chest X-rays, with direct clinical application. I also collaborate with technology companies and public administrations to co-develop and implement digital health solutions.
I actively participate in public outreach activities, conferences, and media appearances, promoting open science and applied research in digital health. My work has contributed to improving health system efficiency, reducing inequalities, and promoting equitable access to innovative healthcare services.
3. Training and Career Development
I am currently supervising 8 PhD theses, three of which are part of industrial doctoral programs. I have already supervised and co-directed six PhD theses that have been successfully defended, five of them awarded the highest academic distinction (cum laude). These theses have focused on real-world applications of artificial intelligence and digital health interventions in primary care, including asynchronous telemedicine, diagnostic support systems for dermatology and radiology, and pediatric pain management using virtual reality.
In addition, I have mentored over 15 master's and undergraduate theses related to digital health, AI, and public health strategies.
I have served as a project evaluator for regional and national calls and am a member of the editorial board of PLOS Digital Health .
4. Leadership in Interdisciplinary Initiatives
I coordinated the research and development team for the work package led by IDIAPJGol in the PECT BAGESS project (Big Data in Health), with €460,000 in funding. I have led multidisciplinary teams composed of clinicians, statisticians, computer scientists, and developers focused on enhancing primary care through emerging technologies.
I founded the I4PC research group – Intelligence for Primary Care – officially recognized and institutionally supported, dedicated to applying AI and eHealth tools to improve primary care services through collaborations with public agencies, universities, and technology centers.
5. Other Relevant Contributions
I am a member of the scientific committee of IDIAPJGol and currently serve as territorial coordinator of the Research and Innovation Unit in Central Catalonia. I have worked as a family physician in rural and semi-rural settings for over 20 years, providing me with practical insight into research questions.
My scientific approach has always focused on solving real-world healthcare problems through scalable and cost-effective digital solutions. My dual role as clinician and researcher ensures the real-world relevance and effective integration of research outcomes into clinical practice.
