Concepció Violán Fors
Dr. Concepció Violan graduated with a Bachelor of Medicine at the University of Barcelona in 1984, specialised in Family and Community Medicine and obtained her PhD at the University of Murcia in 1992. Before her current position as a researcher and CEO of the Fundació Institut universitari per a la recerca a l?atencio primaria de salut Jordi Gol i Gurina (IDIAPJGol), Dr. Violan practised as a GP during 4 years, was a public health technician during two years and for the next 15 years she held various managerial positions in the Catalan and Spanish public health systems: Murcia (1989-1991), Madrid (1992-1996) and Barcelona (1996-2004). Since 2004 Dr. Violan is the CEO of the Fundació Institut universitari per a la recerca a l?atencio primaria de salut Jordi Gol i Gurina (IDIAPJGol).
Dr. Violan focuses on health services research, which aims to help the clinical decision-making process, to improve healthcare and the healthcare system, to facilitate access and promote excellence in provision of services. Health services research provides the tools to the professionals involved in decision making for the evaluation of the impact that changes in the health system have on results, quality, access, cost and use of services.
Dr. Violan is part of a multidisciplinary team of general practitioners, epidemiologists, biostatisticians, economists, psychologists, nurses, physiotherapists and pharmacists, who jointly evaluate primary health care services. She is a member of the GRenSSAP group (Research Group in Health Services), accredited by the RETICS, within the redIAPP (RD06/0018/0000) (www.rediapp.org), and also accredited as an emergent group by the DURSI (Department of University, Research and Information Society) SGR 01468.
Currently, Dr. Violan leads three main areas of research: 1: Primary Care Systems of Information and Register to improve management and clinical practice; 2: Use of resources and services, variability in clinical practice and decision-making capacity in primary care based on information provided by the Information System for the Development of Research in Primary Care (SIDIAP) and other electronic register sources of primary care. Results of this research have already been published in more than 40 articles in peer-reviewed scientific journals; 3: Epidemiology of multimorbidity patterns and prevalence and determinants of multimorbidity (lifestyles, social inequality, use of health services, costs and treatments received) in the Spanish population. Currently, she is involved in 2 projects to study the longitudinal patterns of multimorbidity, funded by Spanish research agencies (PERIS SLT002 / 16/00058; FIS PI16 / 00639).

In her role as CEO of the IDIAPJGol, which currently has over 200 ongoing projects, Dr. Violan has acquired extensive experience in the management and coordination of research studies.
From 1993 to 2010, Dr. Violan was a member of the Advisory Committee of the journal Formación Médica Continuada en Atención Primaria (FMC). She is currently editor and reviewer of various publications such as Biomed Central Public Health and a member of the editorial board of the Journal of Comorbidity. She is also a founding member of Threads and Yarns, an international multi-morbidity research network.
Dr. Violan was a member of the Executive Management of the Society of Family and Community Medicine from 1988 to 1991. She has also regularly participated in the scientific and organizational committees of medical and research meetings.
