Research lines
Line 1 To characterise the clinical epidemiology and the impact on health outcomes of multimorbidity. This line of research aims to provide robust scientific evidence on the onset, progression and impact of multimorbidity, focusing on describing how chronic diseases tend to cluster into multimorbidity patterns and on identifying variables associated with negative health outcomes in patients with multimorbidity. This line aims to raise awareness of multimorbidity among caregivers and to provide them with key evidence to help them care for these patients.
Line 2 To characterise the clinical epidemiology, comorbidity profiles and the factors affecting prognosis in patients with highly prevalent and relevant chronic diseases, including the patients’ perspective. This line aims to provide robust scientific evidence on the clinical epidemiology of relevant and highly prevalent chronic diseases and to support caregivers with clinical tools to improve the care of these patients and include their perspective.
Line 3 To identify risk factors and determinants of frailty and low intrinsic capacity, and develop instruments to identify groups of high-risk patients. This line aims to provide robust scientific evidence on the characterisation and evaluation of frailty and the identification of risk determinants in older patients and those with specific chronic diseases, in order to improve and adapt their care.
Line 4 To characterise the interactions between chronic and infectious diseases and analyse the health and social impact of infectious diseases on patients with chronic diseases. This line is dedicated to generating robust scientific evidence on the effects of infectious diseases on patients with chronic diseases and on high-risk groups (e.g. older people, pregnant women and their newborns).
