Towards breast cancer screening based on individual risk
Speaker: Marta Román Expósito
Marta Román is a biostatistician and works in the Department of Epidemiology and Evaluation at the Hospital del Mar in Barcelona. She holds a PhD in Biomedicine and Health and is deputy coordinator of the Breast Cancer Early Detection Programme at the Parc de Salut Mar. Her research focuses on the evaluation of early breast cancer detection, and she leads national and international projects on personalised screening.
Brief Description of the Session
Early detection of breast cancer is a subject of controversy due to the balance between the benefits and adverse effects of this practice.
Personalised breast cancer screening, based on a woman’s individual risk, is proposed as a desirable alternative to improve the efficiency of this practice. In order to personalise screening, it is necessary to know the individual risk of the women taking part (prediction of the risk of developing the disease over 5 or 10 years), as well as to consider possible strategies to improve its effectiveness (shortening or extending the intervals between mammograms, the technique used, age at which screening begins, etc.).
We will review the current state of personalised breast cancer screening and assess the challenges and strengths of implementing it.
