Specialist doctor in Family and Community Medicine, PhD in Medicine, Master’s degree in Public Health, Rio Hortega researcher at the SNS in the EpiChron Research Group on Chronic Diseases. Her research into chronic diseases and multimorbidity focuses specifically on the study of social determinants, the impact of polypharmacy and treatment adherence on health outcomes.
Multimorbidity is strongly influenced by social determinants, at the aetiological, diagnostic, prognostic and therapeutic levels. Most research and health policies that address social inequalities analyse them as separate, disconnected phenomena. For this reason, this session will examine the intersectional perspective that motivates the study of strata, defined by the combination of several socio-economic dimensions, in contrast to the conventional analysis of socio-economic gradients based on single dimensions. This approach will give students a new way of understanding the complex nature of health inequalities and highlights the importance of structural interventions that address social causes.
