Motivational counselling is one of the most cost-effective interventions in the treatment of tobacco dependence; however, the changes it promotes do not last very long.
The “Vive sin tabaco” app is a combined programme to stop smoking in which the health advice provided during consultations or by telephone is reinforced through motivational messages that the patient receives on their mobile. It needs to be prescribed by the healthcare professional and provides support during the 6 months of the process.
It is based on a messaging system (SMSalud®) that was evaluated through a randomised clinical trial in which we observed that patients with a lower dependence on tobacco were more likely to succeed in quitting smoking with the combined programme. We also found that it is cost-effective. And both arguments supported its conversion into an app and its implementation in primary care health centres.
In this session, the main effectiveness results of this combined programme with health advice to stop smoking will be presented, together with the process undertaken for its translation into clinical practice and its integration into the healthcare system with the electronic health record.
